Siri Fort

Built by Emperor Ala-ud-Din Khilji, Siri Fort is one of the popular tourist destinations in New Delhi. It is located towards the north of Mehrauli and east of Hauz Khas. The foundation stone for Siri Fort was laid in 1303. Get to know more about the Siri Fort during a visit with TravelMaxx.

Siri Fort derived its name from the word Sir that means head in Hindi language. Historically too this name has some meaning as it is believed heads of around 8000 Mongol soldiers were buried in this city. Initially Siri Fort comprised of palaces and other great structures like the seven gates to enter the city. Today only some citadels, ramparts and the southeastern gate exist at the Siri Fort New Delhi.

A walk in Siri Fort palace will no doubt remind you of the luxurious palace that once used to stand here engraved with jewels and other precious stones. Kalkaji Temple, Lotus Temple, Tohfewala Gumbad Masjid, Nizamuddin's Shrine and Chirag Dehlvi's Dargah are some of the nearby attractions that one can visit during a visit to Siri Fort.

You just need half an hour to explore Siri Fort in New Delhi. There are two ways to reach Siri Fort, one is the Khel Gaon Marg towards the west and the other is the Josip Broz Tito Marg towards the east. Visitors are free to visit Siri Fort on all days from sunrise to sunset.
