Humayun's Tomb

Gifted by the third Sultan of the Tughlak dynasty, Ashoka Pillar is a famous structure in New Delhi. This four lion structure symbolizes the kingship of Buddha and his roar in all the four directions. Ashoka Pillar is located just 100 meters southwards from Hindu Rao Hospital in north of Old Delhi. Get to know more about Ashoka Pillar during a visit with TravelMaxx.

Ashoka Pillar features the Lion towards the north, the Bull towards the south, the Horse towards the west and the Elephant towards the east. Built of polished sandstone, Ashoka Pillar in Delhi is 14 feet in height and is the same structure whose picture can be found in the Indian currency.

The Ashoka Pillar was damaged in a gunpowder explosion in 1713, wherein it was broken in to five pieces. It was Hindu Rao who took the possession of these pieces in 1838 and later donated them to the Asiatic Society of Bengal. One can visit the Ashoka Pillar on all the days without paying any entry fee.

Hindu Rao House, Chauburja Masjid, Mutiny Memorial, Pir Ghaib, Qudsia Bagh and Nicholson Cemetery are some of the nearby attractions that are worth visiting during a visit to Ashoka Pillar in New Delhi.
