Having an imperial past, New Delhi has a lot to vouch as history. From being the main point of the first war of independence in 1857 to ultimately gaining the status of India's capital, Delhi's history has a lot to fascinate you.
Built and re-built seven times at different sites in the past, Delhi was under the Hindu reign in the 12th century. It was Mohammed Gauri who defeated Prithviraj Chauhan and kicked off the start if Muslim reign in Delhi. Later rulers like Qutab-ud-din Aibak, Ala-ud-din Kilji ruled Delhi. Ferozabad, Tughlaqabad, Shahjahanabad are some of the cities built in Delhi in the bygone era. Seventh and the last city to be built in Delhi was Shahjahanabad, named after Shah Jahan, under whose rule, Delhi got monuments like Red Fort.
Talking about the history of New Delhi, the credit for its design goes to the British, especially Lutyen. This is the reason it is called New Delhi or Lutyen's Delhi. The royal citadels of Indraprastha, Jahanpanah, Tughlakabad, Ferozabad, Lal Kot and Quila Rai Pithora are witness to the rise and fall of the bygone empires in Delhi.
Delhi history has a strong significance in the history of freedom struggle in India. One of the events that marked a new chapter in Delhi as well as in India's history was the hosting of the Tricolor at Red Fort after gaining independence.
